Meet the next UN chief, South Korean diplomat Ban Ki-Moon

By TMM

Posted: October 3, 2006

OUR THREE-TO-ONE FAVORITE South Korean diplomat Ban Ki-Moon moves one giant step closer to becoming the first Asian to head the United Nations since 1971, when U Thant of Burma was top banana. Having survived this week’s Security Council straw poll, he’s shaping up to be the consensus candidate, i.e. someone the U.S. and China think they can push around. After Kofi’s tumultuous tenure, maybe a self-described “harmonizer” is what the world needs. Given North Korea’s latest missile-test announcement, we’re hoping some Kim Chi Diplomacy will save the day. Otherwise, it’s time to get Il!
