Fiji’s military takes over, locals yawn

By TMM Editors

Posted: December 5, 2006

IN WHAT MAY HAVE BEEN the most anticlimactic overthrow of a government in a while, Fiji’s military commander seized control of the island nation after months of preparation and tough talk, marking the fourth time little Fiji’s had a coup in 20 years.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama’s rise to power was also significant because he may have the coolest-sounding rank of any of the world’s military dictators, and because late-night TV gags about his name may be enough to resurrect the fortunes of a certain ’80s all-girl pop band. You could say that former prime minister Laisenia Qarase, now under house arrest, is in for a “Cruel Summer.”
