BY WINNING the prestigious Fields Medal this week, Chinese Australian Terence Tao affirmed one stereotype (Asians are eggheads) while exploding another common perception (Australians are meatheads). Born in Adelaide, South Australia, the 31-year-old UCLA professor (who taught himself to read at age two) told The Australian, “Perhaps it is good to be reminded that Australians can hold their own in academia as well as in sport[s].” Hold on, professor. You may know a little something about harmonic analysis and additive number theory, but we’re talking about Australians here? Not so long ago, they were complaining about the Asian Invasion!
