Pune Awaits Brangelina

Indian city prepares for Hurricane Brangelina

By TMM

Date posted: October 01, 2006

THE WESTERN INDIAN TOWN of Pune is gripped with “Brangelina fever,” so the local papers say. Actress Angelina Jolie, accompanied by BF Brad Pitt, is scheduled to begin shooting a film there this week based on the life of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was abducted and killed by terrorists in Pakistan four years ago. Jolie will play the part of Pearl’s wife in “A Mighty Heart.” No doubt, Pune’s tourism officials are hoping for a travel boom like the one that Brangelina bestowed on on Windhoek, Nambia earlier this year. But not everyone is blinded by the Hollywood glare. After all, Pune is home to the esteemed Film and Television Institute of India AND the National Film Archives. Sniffed one aspiring actress, “I don’t think Jolie visiting Pune will have any major impact on more serious film watching.” —TMM
