Gong Li adds class to crass in Miami Vice

By Lily Huang

Posted: July 23, 2006

IN MIAMI VICE, which opens Friday, July 28, Gong Li plays Isabella, a Chinese-Cubana who becomes the dangerous love-interest of snarky narc Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell). Michael Mann’s pic is a would-be summer blockbuster with guns, drugs, speedboats, and a sexy salsa between Li and Farrell that we hope won’t be too embarrassing. For Li, it’s quite a departure from Red Sorghum and other Zhang Yimou classics, and even from her first Hollywood film, last summer’s Memoirs of a Geisha. Li will once again play Japanese—as Lady Murasaki in Behind the Mask (2007), a Silence of the Lambs prequel about young Hannibal Lecter set in 1940s Paris. Now that’s our kind of vice.
