Our editorial mission is to give a fresh spin to Asia-related news. We’re looking for gung-ho journalists with an eye for offbeat stories, writers who can give an unusual twist to conventional topics like music, movies, television, Web culture, food, travel, design, fashion, sex, relationships, politics, international news. Almost everything is fair game if the writing is crisp, smart and sassy.

length & format

We accept a wide range of pieces, from 150-word “Rice Radar” news write-ups to feature articles up to 2,500 words long. The format of the pieces can also vary, from a Q&A (with Mike Tyson, for example, on his Maoist beliefs) to a humor piece or personal essay. That’s not to say we’re not interested in your clever podcast, your genre-busting manga, or your thought-provoking gallery of photos or paintings. We welcome all media—it’s the Web, isn’t it?

Have you written a brilliant niche-topic article that hasn’t found the right home? Do you want to get some buzz going for your (nonfiction) masterpiece-in-progress by publishing an excerpt? Do you need fresh clips or want to try your hand at different subjects? TripmasterMonkey is here to give you an appreciative audience.

At this time, we can’t pay you—except in party invites and TMM gear—but you’ll get a byline and prominent play on the homepage. Hey, better read than fed!

getting an assignment

If you want to pitch an idea, send us a brief description of the piece, why it belongs on TripmasterMonkey.com, how you’ll go about reporting the story (i.e. potential sources, narrative arc, etc.), why you’re the person to write this article. Tell us a little about yourself and include your phone number. If you want to write but don’t have a topic yet, we have lots of fun assignments to hand out. Just ask.

submitting your story

When submitting a draft, PLEASE INCLUDE LINKS TO SOURCES FOR FACT-CHECKING PURPOSES. To maintain the magazine’s voice, each story usually goes through several rounds of editing. Writers should expect to work closely with editors on revisions.
